"A Raisin In The Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry is about an African American family living in a mostly white part of Chicago during World WarII,  were they struggle to get by. They are a family of 5 (Travis, Walter,Ruth, Benetha, and Mama)  living in a two bedroom apartment, Travis being the youngest he has to sleep on the couch every night. In the text, you can infer that Ruth and Walter can not afford a lot of the things they own, and it is hard for them to get by during this time.

               In the beginning of the play Walter is going on about his problems at work during breakfast while his eggs are getting cold, Ruth is getting angry with him which could tell the reader that even putting food on the table could be a struggle for this family. You can infer this because when you can't afford certin this you can't let them go to waist.

               Towards the middle of the play Travis claims that he needs one dollar for a school trip, Walter gives Travis the money but Ruth does not approve, I think Ruth doesn't approve because they are in debt from other expenses, and Walter is a bit more oblivious to there situation. One dollar is also known to be more money back in the 1950's.

               This shows that even smalls things like this are very valuble to some people and that Ruth and Walter can not afford a lot of the things they have, and it is hard for them to get by in this time.
